Hi Card Lovers, Give A Fig is almost 2!

It’s been a whirlwind since starting Give A Fig™ almost 2 years ago. There are now 16 designs, with 3 new card concepts coming soon—a woman Super Hero, a new birthday greeting and a woodland Holiday scene. Give A Fig™ cards are available in many fine boutiques in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Wyre Naturals in North East, MD is the most recent store to join the Give A Fig™ family. See: www.wyrenaturals.net

Of course, you can always purchase cards through our website too. And we’re constantly looking for new partners to sell Give A Fig™ cards in their shops. We’ve had many requests for eco-tote bags, T-shirts and other merchandise, so we’re exploring options for beautiful, affordable items made completely in the USA. Thank you for choosing Give A Fig™, Cards to show you care. Let us know what you wish for Give A Fig™. Thanks again!

Card Contest and Give Away!

images Give A Fig™ is looking for a few good ideas. It’s July but romance is always in season! We need YOUR help to develop a unique approach to Valentine’s Day – the most popular time of the year to tell someone YOU CARE with a card.

With a reputation for romance, it’s little wonder France has long celebrated Valentine’s Day as a day for lovers. It’s been said that the first Valentine’s Day card originated in France when Charles, Duke of Orleans, sent love letters to his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415. Today, Valentine’s Day cards remain a popular tradition in France and around the world.

Today, Italians celebrate Valentine’s Day with card and gift exchanges between lovers and romantic dinners. One of the most popular Valentine’s Day gifts in Italy are baci perugina, which are small, chocolate-covered hazelnuts wrapped with a romantic quote printed in four languages.

Like many parts of the world, South Africa celebrates Valentine’s Day with festivals, flowers and cards of love. It’s also customary for women in South Africa to wear their hearts on their sleeves on February 14th. Women pin the names of their love interest on their shirtsleeves, an ancient Roman tradition known as Lupercalia. In some cases, this is how South African men learn of their secret admirers.

To enter the contest, explain your concept with a unique phrase and image idea here at the Give A Fig™ website or at Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Google+. If we select yours for our Valentine card, you’ll receive a set of six Give A Fig™ cards with envelopes (a $30.00 value).

We’re also excited to announce that we’ve created four new designs including a Happy Birthday card and two Holiday cards. You’ll be the first to see our new designs this fall! As always we want to know what you think so be sure to comment.

E-cards and paper greetings

I admit I sometimes send an E-card. It may seem crazy to write this on my PAPER GREETING CARD blog, but there are times when they make sense. And who knows, some day GIVE A FIG™ may even develop online greetings. In fact, friends have asked and we are looking into the technology.

Here’s a fun site for unusual (and sometimes “raunchy”) greetings, with the tagline: Free E-cards that don’t suck.  http://www.rattlebox.com

One reason we at GIVE A FIG™ believe so strongly in paper greetings (despite the cost of postage, the speed of “snail mail” and the environmental impact of paper and print production) is because people still LOVE to get a personal message on paper, even in this fast-paced electronic age. Or maybe because of it! Whether a card is mailed or is handed out, the recipient understands that the sender cared enough to search for, purchase, write a message, and seal their greeting in an envelope to be delivered to them. Birthday, holiday, and thank you cards are very popular. In fact, annual retail sales of paper cards are estimated at $7 billion.

Here’s an older article about the paper card vs. e-card debate. In summary, it suggests that the two complement each other.

GIVE A FIG with Holly!

I’m excited to announce that Holly Tyson has joined our sales and marketing team at GIVE A FIG™ Cards with a Conscience. Holly is someone I greatly admire because, like GIVE A FIG™, she cares and she seeks ways to “give back.” She started the local farmers’ market, serves on the area park authority, runs an organic farm, and volunteers for organizations around the globe who work for a better world and positive change.

Here’s Holly in an olive tree while volunteering during the olive harvest in the West Bank of Palestine. She says, “It was pretty awesome to be there for 2 weeks working with the International Solidarity Movement, which supports non-violent work in Palestine.”

Holly and I also share a passion for cards! Both of us collect unique greetings from trips all over the world to save, send, and share with friends and family. We welcome Holly to GIVE A FIG™!

An Evening of Inspiration

About once a month, a group of women friends meets at someone’s home to share some “Inspiration.” Topics have included calligraphy, yoga, cooking, manicures/pedicures, ceramics, beading, stained glass, ornaments and wreath making, wine tasting, and even a night of games. These are casual events with simple appetizers to share and glasses of wine. We laugh, listen to music, admire each other’s skills (or lack thereof), talk, and create something to bring home, even if it’s simply pretty nails or a new movie or book to check out.

I admire each of the women friends who gathers for our “Evenings of Inspiration.” They’re balancing careers with raising children, volunteering in the community, taking care of elderly parents, working in the schools, and dedicating themselves to many worthwhile causes. It’s often hard to find time to meet. But I think each of us understands the importance of women getting together to nurture each other and ourselves once in awhile. We can be better mothers, professionals, advocates, and activists by supporting each other in a creative way.

Tonight we’re meeting at my place to make a “Couples Wheel.” This is something entirely new for all of us, including me! We’ll chart each person’s position on a medicine wheel based on their birthdate, and then compare that with the position of their significant other. Maybe we’ll learn something about ourselves and about those who are important in our lives. Regardless, we’ll have fun.

What do you do for Inspiration?

Think SPRING!

Think spring budding flowersI saw snowdrops yesterday. The little white jewels poked from between clumps of snow, their heads bowed on tiny green stems. What a joy! Hang on, Spring is almost here. Think SPRING!

The Enkindled Spring

By D. H. Lawrence

This spring as it comes bursts up in bonfires green,
Wild puffing of emerald trees, and flame-filled bushes,
Thorn-blossom lifting in wreaths of smoke between
Where the wood fumes up and the watery, flickering rushes.

I am amazed at this spring, this conflagration
Of green fires lit on the soil of the earth, this blaze
Of growing, and sparks that puff in wild gyration,
Faces of people streaming across my gaze.

And I, what fountain of fire am I among
This leaping combustion of spring? My spirit is tossed
About like a shadow buffeted in the throng
Of flames, a shadow that's gone astray, and is lost.
